UK weather: Flood and 'do not travel' warnings issued as Storm Claudia arrives

The storm has brought heavy downpours and flooding, with the Met Office warning some areas could see up to a month's worth of rain in 24 hours - Portugal and Spain are also under weather warnings.

A significant weather event has landed across the UK: Storm Claudia is bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds and serious disruption to many regions – especially parts of England and Wales.
The Met Office has issued amber warnings for persistent, heavy rain covering key zones including Wales, the Midlands, south-east and east of England. In the highest risk areas, total rainfall could reach 100-150 mm in just 24 hours — roughly what many places might see in an entire month.
Heavy rain is not the only concern: strong easterly winds — in some exposed places gusting up to 70 mph — are adding to the hazard.

  • The risk of flooding is high. Much of the rain is falling on already-saturated ground and swollen rivers, which raises the prospect of both surface-water and fluvial flooding.

  • Travel disruption is extensive. Rail services are heavily affected with cancellations and speed restrictions. Road users face flood-water, fallen trees and high winds. Many authorities are advising: do not travel unless absolutely essential

  • After the storm, there’s a shift to colder weather ahead. Once the heavy rain eases, a cold air mass is expected to move in, bringing overnight frosts and even the possibility of snow showers in more northern/hilly zones.

  • Stay updated with the latest weather alerts for your region, especially if you live in a flood-prone area or near rivers.

  • Avoid travelling during the heaviest rain or wind. If you must, plan ahead and allow extra time.

  • Never drive or walk through flood-water — even seemingly shallow water can be deeper and faster flowing than it looks.

  • Protect property where you can: clear gutters, secure loose items outdoors, and check you have an emergency kit ready (torch, phone charger, warm clothing, etc).

  • Be prepared for changing conditions: heavy rain today may be followed by icy or snowy conditions in places — so keep an eye on evolving forecasts.

Storm Claudia is a timely reminder of how quickly weather can shift from heavy rain to travel chaos and flooding risk. With the right preparation and healthy respect for the warnings in place, readers can stay safer and minimise disruption. If you’re reading this and in a vulnerable zone, now is the time to act: adjust your plans, secure your surroundings, and heed the “do not travel” advice while it remains in force.
